In like manner when in pursuit of the idea of an instrument to be used in some investiga- tion the physicist puts forth certain conscious activities the result of which is the appearance among phenomena of new tool he is conscious of having performed function analogous to that which he locates in the heart of his world.

But he is also conscious of great difference.

From the physical situation he must eliminate the idea which stimu- lated his activities supplied them the model toward which they were to work.

He must also eliminate all elements of conscious selection guidance or purpose.

The operation of his agent must be idea-less blind fatalistic making straight unerringly for goal that is not in any sense its aim.
